Creative Writing Summer School


Starting to Write Prose Fiction and Poetry which creates a ‘sense of place’.

This course will help you start writing short fiction and poetry which has a strong sense of place and setting and ways of unblocking your creativity and getting you started. It is designed for people who would like to begin writing more regularly. It is also for those who may have written some short stories or poems, but have had little or no feedback and would like to learn to improve their writing through class exercises and critiques.

You will learn the building blocks of setting the scene.

During the course you will cover:

  • Where does a convincing ‘sense of place’ come from? You will learn how and where to look for ideas.
  • Learning to use memory and imagination to develop ideas for setting the scene.
  • Learning to observe, listen and record first-hand information
  • Learning to record secondary research
  • Discover how to balance your research on locations and avoid over-use of research
  • Learning how to write effective description.
  • Learning how to manage time
  • You will be introduced to some different forms of writing which has a strong sense of place

By the end of the course you will:

  • Be familiar with the basic elements of how to create a ‘sense of place’.
  • Have examined some published texts in detail.
  • Write a complete short story/prose extract/series of poems using what you have learnt about creating a ‘sense of place’.
  • Know how to give and receive useful, precise feedback and revise and improve your own work.
  • Developed your own writer space
  • Know how to keep your own writer’s notebook and come up with further ideas.
